HARRIS AND LEGG TO CONTEST ST. MELLION TROPHY
The English Golf Union has accepted an invitation to send
two players, Geoff Harris (Reading) and Giles Legg (Dudsbury),
to compete for the St. Mellion International Trophy being
played over the Jack Nicklaus Course at St. Mellion on 5-7
August.
Harris, 21, at university in the United States, reached the
quarter finals of the English Amateur at Saunton in 2001 after
which he became a member of the England ‘A’ Squad.
He was named as reserve for the full England side for last
year’s international with France at Chantilly and again
reached the last eight of the English Amateur at Walton Heath.
Legg, the runner-up to champion Richard Finch at Walton Heath,
has been a consistent performer on the amateur scene in recent
years without winning a title.
The 32 year old finished fourth in the Brabazon Trophy at
Hunstanton, seventh in the Lytham Trophy and eighth in the
Lagonda Trophy at Gog Magog. However, he did win the Dorset
Stroke Play Championship last year.
Past winners of the St. Mellion event include Amateur champion
Gary Wolstenholme, ex-international David Griffiths, now a
professional, and Tom Peacock.
Half of this year’s field of 72 players have handicaps
of scratch or better. There will be a cut after 36 holes with
the leading 40 players and ties competing for the final two
rounds.
