ENGLAND SECOND AT EUROPEAN YOUNG MASTERS
England finished second in the European Young Masters held
at Augsburg Golf Club in Germany last week.
Second place is the highest placing for an English Team at
this mixed event, comprising of two boys and two girls under
the age of 16. The boys were Ben Parker (Royal Birkdale),
Oliver Fisher (West Essex), the girls were Florentyna Parker
(Royal Birkdale) and Kiran Matharu (Sand Moor).
In the Nations Cup England finished two shots behind Spain
who finished first on one under par gross over the three rounds.
England closed the gap by 8 shots on the final day by posting
an excellent score of 10 under par, with three out of four
scores to count per round towards the Nations Cup. Wales finished
in third a further 14 shots back.
Ben Parker won the boys individual gold medal with an excellent
score of 5 under par, with scores of 75, 68 and 68 for a total
of 211, two shots ahead of Ireland’s Rory McIIroy and
three ahead of Luis Garcia del Moral of Spain. England’s
Oliver Fisher finished in fourth on 215 with scores of 72,
75 and 68. Ben Parker received his gold medal from Bernard
Langer the newly appointed Ryder Cup Captain, which was a
special touch by the event organisers.
Florentyna Parker finished fifth in the girls individual
on 224, with scores of 74, 80 and 70, which was the second
lowest girls gross score in the championship. Kiran Matharu
finished in eleventh place on 233, with scores of 82, 79 and
72.
England will be hoping to go one place better when the event
moves to Murhof Golf Club in Austria in 2004.
