BRABAZON TROPHY RETURNS TO GANTON IN 2006
Among the highlights of the English Golf Union's fixture
list for 2006 just released sees its premier events return
to two prestigious venues.
The Brabazon Trophy goes back to Ganton, venue for September’s
Walker Cup matches against the United States, while the English
Amateur Championship makes a return visit to Burnham &
Berrow.
This will be the fourth occasion that Ganton has played host
to the Brabazon Trophy, the English Men’s Open Stroke
Play Championship. It was staged there first in 1952 when
Philip Scrutton took the title by a shot, the first of his
three victories in the space of four years.
The Brabazon returned to the North Yorkshire venue in 1960
when the late Guy Wolstenholme, father of Amateur champion
Gary, beat Martin Christmas in an 18-hole play-off, while
the most recent staging at Ganton was in 1987 when Jeremy
Robinson took the title by a stroke.
The English Amateur Championship has visited Burnham &
Berrow five times before. The Somerset seaside links played
host for the first time in 1930 when England international
Dale Bourn was the champion and again in 1952 when Walker
Cup man Ernest Millward came out on top.
Michael Bonallack won the second of his five title there
in 1963, beating Alan Thirlwell, the recently retired secretary
of CONGU, then in 1971 Warren Humphreys, now a TV golf commentator,
recorded a 9 and 8 victory over John Davies in the 36-hole
final at Burnham.
On the most recent occasion the English visited Somerset,
David Blakeman beat Andy Stubbs, now the Executive Director
of the European Seniors Tour. Burnham & Berrow also staged
the English County Finals in 2001 and will host the Carris
Trophy, the Boys’ Under-18 Stroke Play Championship,
later this month.
The Devon courses at Yelverton and Tavistock will stage the
Seniors' Championship from 7-9 June, while the Mid-Amateur
Championship for the Logan Trophy is scheduled for Hayling
in Hampshire on 25-27 August.
The County Finals are also being staged in the South at Prince’s
in Kent on 29 September - 1 October, while another prestigious
venue, Pannal near Harrogate, will host the Boys County Finals
on 29-31 August.
The venue for the Champion Club tournament on 15-16 September,
has still to be agreed, while the County Champions event extends
its link with Woodhall Spa, being played over the Hotchkin
Course on 23 September.
The Lower Course at Worthing in Sussex will stage the McGregor
Trophy (Boys Under-16 Stroke Play Championship) on 4-7 July,
while the Carris Trophy (Boys Under-18 Stroke Play Championship)
will be played at Sherwood Forest on 25-27 July.
Meanwhile, the Under-14 Stroke Play Championship for the
Reid Trophy, will be staged at Gosforth, Newcastle-upon-Tyne,
on 17-18 August, while the annual Boys Under-16 international
with Scotland is also set for the North of England at Hartlepool
on 8 October. The Under-16 Boys v England Under-18 Girls match
is at Longcliffe on 15 October.
The former IMS Finals now the English Captains Tournament
will be held at Fulford Golf Club, York, on 23-24 September.
