LOCKERBIE IS ENGLISH CHAMPION
Gary Lockerbie, a member of the England Elite Squad from
Penrith Golf Club in Cumbria is the new English Amateur Champion.
Lockerbie, 20, beat fellow Elite Squad member Michael Skelton
(Middlesbrough GC) 6&5 in the 36 hole final on Saturday
at Alwoodley Golf Club, Leeds. Lockerbie two-under par in
his morning round to be 1 up played the next 13 holes in six-under
par to claim the title.
Lockerbie showed the consistent accuracy from the tee all
week that sees him lying second in the PING/EGU Performance
Measurement statistics Driving Accuracy table with 86% of
fairways hit.
Gary, delighted with his victory commented “I played
well all week, my game was consistent. The longer I stayed
in the tournament the stronger my game became. This win is
very special to me, and hopefully I will now secure my first
England cap in the Home Internationals.”
Gary’s victory moves him up to 11th place in the PING/EGU
Order of Merit with Michael Skelton’s runner up spot
taking him to 3rd place behind Gary Wolstenholme (Kilworth
Springs GC) and Richard Walker (Frodsham GC).
Performance Director, Nigel Furniss commented “I am
pleased for Gary, this victory will give him a great deal
of confidence. It was good to see the final contested by two
of the Elite Squad, which confirms the strength of talent
in the squad”.
Lockerbie will now look forward to the next event in the
World Class Performance Programme, the International European
Amateur Championship to be played at Nairn Golf Club 20th
– 23rd August. Skelton meanwhile has no rest as he flies
to Helsinki on Monday 4th August for the Finnish Amateur Championship
along with Elite Squad members Gary Wolstenholme and Ross
Fisher (Wentworth GC).
