ENGLAND PARTY GO DUTCH WITH EUROPEAN TITLE IN MIND
England are leaving no stone unturned in their bid to win
the biennial European Men’s Team Championship in Holland
in July.
Preparation is the name of the game and three members of
the Elite Squad are to make a fact-finding visit to the Royal
Hague Golf Club next week along with England Captain, Cecil
Bloice and National Coach, Keith Williams.
The Yorkshire trio of Graeme Clark, Richard Finch and Jonathan
Lupton will complete the party that will be in The Hague from
15-17 April running the rule over the course as well as other
facilities in readiness for the Championships, which take
place there on 1-5 July.
“The trip is purely to familiarise ourselves with the
area, the course, how the hotel is situated in relationship
to the course, and to give ourselves an idea of what to expect
in July,” says Bloice. “I haven’t been there
before but I understand there is a lot of work going on with
the course."
“If we want to be the best we’ve got to prepare
properly. We don’t know who will be in the team yet
but this visit will mean we have prior knowledge of what the
course is all about and should enhance our chances come July.”
It is 12 years since England last won the European title.
That was back in 1991 at Puerto de Hierro in Spain and since
then they have finished runners-up twice, third in 2001, fourth
once and tenth on the other occasion.
In the previous Championships two years ago in Sweden, England
finished third behind winners Scotland and Ireland despite
topping the Stroke Play section.
