GRAND PRIX OF ASSEN
The race / FOURTH VICTORY OF THE SEASON FOR LORENZO
WHO PRODUCES A DOMINANT DISPLAY AT ASSEN
Jorge Lorenzo claimed his fourth victory of the season at
the Dutch Grand Prix at Assen on Saturday. The win saw him
reduce Andrea Dovizioso’s championship lead to 18 points
with the Italian finishing in third. Lorenzo made a perfect
start and rode a faultless race, he completely dominated the
rest of the field, winning by some eight seconds. Starting
from pole position for the fifth time this season, the FORTUNA
APRILIA rider was in complete control throughout and added
another win to his triumphs in Jerez, Losail and Mugello.
Team-mate Alex Debon finished in fourth, the best result of
his career, having successfully avoided a multiple crash on
the first lap. The team will decide on Monday whether Hector
Barbera is ft enough to return at Donington Park, otherwise
Debon will stay on for another race.
JORGE LORENZO, 1st
“I was better than my rivals throughout the weekend.”
“I knew that I was superior to my rivals here, but
if you don’t prove it in the race it counts for nothing.
I got away well and tried to open up a gap straightaway, but
with the new tyres it was impossible. As they began to wear
I maintained the same pace and managed to pull away from De
Angelis and Dovizioso. It’s my most enjoyable win of
the season and I want to dedicate it to Dani and Marcos with
whom I am very close. There is still half the championship
to go and I am convinced I can make up the eighteen point
gap to Dovizioso. We must continue in this vein of form and
make sure we take advantage of every opportunity to make up
the gap.”
ALEX DEBÓN, 4th
“I am delighted to have achieved my best-ever World
Championship result.”
“I am happy with the result and with the great work
we have achieved this weekend. Without the multiple crash
on the first lap, which I just avoided but which cost me time,
I believe I could have maintained the pace of Dovizioso and
De Angelis and have fought for a place on the podium. We were
close to the podium, but I hope to get on it next time I have
the chance to race.
DANI AMATRIAIN. Team Manager
“The doctors will tell us on Monday if Barbera is fit
to return at Donington.”
“I want to thank the FORTUNA APRILIA team for the excellent
work they have done, and also Jorge and Alex for the joint
result. Jorge rode a great race and continued his excellent
form from qualifying and Alex would have been fighting for
the podium if it hadn’t been for the first-lap crash.
Hector Barbera will undergo a medical on Monday and the doctors
will decide if he is ready to return at Donington. I hope
he recovers quickly and joins Jorge back at the top of the
championship.”
