Italian GP First day

THE FORTUNA YAMAHA RIDERS END THE FIRST DAY OF QUALIFYING AT THE ITALIAN GP

In the first day of qualifying at the Italian Grand Prix, the Fortuna Yamaha MotoGP riders Ruben Xaus and David Checa secured 16th and 17th places respectively. Xaus continues his adaptation to the M1, while his team-mate at Mugello David Checa, (who is replacing the injured Toni Elias), was staright on the pace on the Yamaha and surprised the team led by Antonio Jimenez.

DAVID CHECA.
17th in the MotoGP class after 1st qualifying.
1'53.769, (+ 3.107)

"I felt very comfortable from the start and lapped well all day. I was, though, using old tyres and when I put on new ones I fell. I found myself behind Valentino on the track and wanted to follow him, but the tyres weren’t warm enough and on the final straight I fell. It’s clear what happened, I wanted to improve too much too quickly. It would not have happened if I had taken things a bit easier, but you learn from your mistakes. Tomorrow I can just say I will give my all and we will see what happens.”

RUBEN XAUS.
16th in the MotoGP class after 1st qualifying.
1'52.750, (+ 2.088)

"Last year here I did not do badly, but the way the season is going is costing me. I am just looking to enjoy myself and feel comfortable on the M1, and until I achieve that I won’t stop. In the afternoon I improved a bit and I hope to continue in that vein tomorrow.”

ANTONIO JIMENEZ, Chief Mechanic for David Checa

“He went quicker than we had hoped. Getting on a bike from cold is difficult, and he surprised us because he is close to people who have done more than 10,000kms this season. Little by little he was getting more confident, and getting more comfortable on the bike, although it could prove more difficult to try and take another second off his time now.”
