Italian GP Second qualifying practice

POLE POSITION FOR FORTUNA HONDA

Jorge Lorenzo became the fastest rider ever around the Mugello circuit on a 250cc machine this afternoon as he stormed to his first pole position in the class at the Italian Grand Prix. The teenager from Mallorca put his lap time down the hard work put in by his team, whilst Héctor Barberá struggled with an injury to his left arm which needed to be analysed by the championship’s medical staff. The youngster was unable to improve his provisional qualifying time but is happy with his race set-up and will start from the second row of the grid.

Jorge Lorenzo, pole position, 1'53.494.

"I’m really happy. The first time is always special and this is my first pole in 250cc. I want to give my heartfelt thanks to the whole team because sometimes when things aren’t going well I’m a bit out of order with them. I really appreciate their efforts.
I’m learning to suffer – I finished reading the second part of Lance Armstrong’s autobiography three days ago and it helped me a lot.
I already took a step forward at Le Mans and then another one during the day of tests the following day. I’ve got a lot more confidence in the bike now – I’ve improved corner entry and that is complimented by my speed through the corner, which has allowed me to take this next step forward. I’m expecting a tough race tomorrow – 125 style!”

Héctor Barberá, 8th fastest, 1'54.800, +1.306 from pole.

"I was able to ride much today. I crashed this morning and I’ve had a lot of problems with my left arm. It keeps going to sleep on me and I’ve got no strength to keep my lines in the left-handers. I can’t brake hard or pick the bike up.
I’m a bit worried and I’m going to go and see the doctors.
As far as the performance on the track is concerned, and looking at it from a positive viewpoint as always, I’m happy with the set-up we’ve found. The only thing missing is my fitness – we’ll have to wait and see if the doctors can help."

Dani Amatriaín, Manager Fortuna Honda 250cc Team Manager

"I can’t hide my delight for the whole team because of the way they are fighting and working. I’m happy because Jorge has managed his first pole position in 250cc. Let’s see if we have some luck tomorrow and at least get on the podium."
