LORENZO WILL UNDERGO SURGERY ON HIS FRACTURED COLLARBONE
TODAY
It was a day to forget for the FORTUNA HONDA riders at the
GP of Catalunya on Sunday although both demonstrated their
enormous potential in the 250 class. It was undoubtedly Jorge
Lorenzo who had the worst off the luck. After falling down
to sixth from the start, the Mallorcan rider was making up
places as he climbed back through the field. He had moved
into third, behind team-mate Barbera, when, on lap 11, he
clashed with Alex de Angelis. The San Marino rider had run
wide and, on trying to pull back on to the inside of the Repsol
corner, ran into the path of Lorenzo who could not avoid him.
The two bikes hit and Lorenzo fell, fracturing his collarbone.
He was taken to the Mobile Clinic where he was seen by Dr
Xavier Mir, and will be operated on this afternoon.
“Jorge has suffered a double fracture of his left collarbone.
To ensure the quickest possible recovery, the best thing will
be to operate as soon as possible to place a small titanium
plate in the afected area.”
After the surgery the rider will again be assessed to see
how the operation went. Obviously Lorenzo’s participation
in the Dutch GP is now in doubt, although the first thing
the rider did was to ask about his chances of making the race
because it is at a circuit he is confident will suit his riding
style.
Héctor Barberá, for his part, proved he has
fully adapted to the 250 class. He made a spectacular start
in which he made up seven places, and showed excellent ability
to handle all the changes made to his bike after the warm-up
session. On the tenth lap Hector had moved into the lead,
although he was then passed by eventual race winner Dani Pedrosa.
Nine laps from the finish, Hector and Corsi were locked in
a fierce battle for fourth spot, and the Italian actually
made contact with his rival on two occasions. These clashes
took their toll on Barbera’s bike which began to lose
some performance. From then on Hector did everything he could
to ensure he finished the race although he finished outside
the points in 16th. It was a very different scenario to last
year when he won at this circuit, although on both occasions
Corsi was a key protagonist in his race.
