April - O’CONNELL WINS GOLD
Alex O’Connell has become Britain’s youngest
fencing world champion at the age of 16. At the junior/cadet
world championships in Linz, Austria, he won the cadet men’s
sabre title, crushing the Ukrainian, Anton Kuksa, 15-7 in

3rd November - VETERAN WORLD CHAMPIONS
British veteran fencers won two gold, one silver and two
bronze medals at the 2004 World Veterans Championships in
Austria. Richard Cohen and Ralph Johnson won gold in their
respective 50+ sabre and epee events. Janet Cooksey won the
silver medal in the 60+ foil, and Jim Philbin (50+ sabre)
and Malcolm Cawton (60+ sabre) received bronze medals.
3rd November - OLYMPIC FENCERS
Britain’s No. 1 foilist, Richard Kruse, 21, reached
the final tableau in his first Olympics – the best British
men’s foil achievement since Bill Hoskyns 40 years ago.

16th November - Senior World Championships
Foilist Richard Kruse reached the last eight of the Senior
World Championships in Cuba, losing to the eventual winner,
Peter Joppich of Germany, 15-13. This is Britain's best result
at these championships for over 30 years and is a tremendous
achievement for the 22-year-old Londoner, who trains at Salle
Paul.
16th November - Born To Win
Under-20 sabre champion Peter Kirby reached the final group
of four in the BBC sports programme Born To Win. One of 4000
applicants who took part in the first round of testing in
January, Peter emerged as one of an elite group of ten boys
who were sent to Austria in the summer to compete against
each other. After a gruelling series of events designed to
test speed, power, ensurance, agility and mental strength,
he came fourth.
16th November - World Veterans Championships
British veteran fencers won two gold and six bronze medals
at the World Veterans Championships in France. Simon Hartley
and Peter Baron won gold in their respective 60+ foil and
sabre events. Bronze medals were awarded to Clare Halsted
(50+ foil and epee), Janet Cooksey (60+ foil and epee), Ralph
Johnson (50+ epee) and Malcolm Fare (60+ epee).

23rd April - WORLD JUNIOR & CADET CHAMPIONSHIPS
Britain’s Junior European men’s foil champion,
Richard Kruse, finished 10th out of 116 in the Junior World
Championships in Trapani, Sicily.
