OLYMPIC PLACES FOR KRUSE & BOND-WILLIAMS
Richard
Kruse and Louise Bond-Williams have both qualified for the
Olympic Games in Athens. At the European Zone Selection Tournaments
to allocate the last 14 places, Kruse won the men’s
foil event and Bond-Williams came second in women’s
sabre.
After
winning four out of six bouts in the pool, Kruse beat Or (ISR)
15-10 in the quarter-finals, Kourak (BLR) 15-4 in the semis
and Schlosser (AUT) 15-10 in the final. Bond-Williams also
won four out of six in her pool and then went on to beat Johannsdottir
(ISL) 15-11 in the quarters and Byre (IRL) 15-4 in the semis
before just losing 14-15 to Nagy (HUN) in the final.
James Williams finished 4th in the men’s sabre event,
missing qualifying for his third Olympics by just one fight,
when he lost 6-15 to Sznajder (POL) in the semi-finals.
