WORLD JUNIOR & CADET CHAMPIONSHIPS

Juniors (U20)
Britain’s Junior European men’s foil champion, Richard Kruse, finished 10th out of 116 in the Junior World Championships in Trapani, Sicily. He won all his fights in the qualifying round of pools, then had a difficult first direct elimination bout against Ota (Japan), which he won 15-13, and a rather easier last 32 bout against Nemeskal (Czech Republic), winning 15-3. But in the L16 Richard was edged out 13-15 by the Russian Moltchan, who went on to win the bronze medal.

Three other juniors reached the L32 in their respective events: Hannah Bryars (women’s foil) came 19th out of 67, and in women’s sabre Jessica Lacheta was 20th and Jo Hutchison 23rd out of 60.

In the team events the men foilists – Richard Kruse, Laurence Halsted and David Riseley – won a close match against Poland 45-43 before losing to Germany (bronze medallists) 31-45, finishing a good 6th out of 24 teams.

The men epeeists also won their first match, albeit by an even closer margin, beating Sweden 45-44, and then lost to the eventual silver medallists Russia 30-45 to finish 16th out of 35.

Cadets (U17)
Junior and Cadet women’s foil champion Dominique Stowell achieved Britain’s best result in the World Cadet Championships, coming 12th out of 66. With four wins out of five in the pools, she received a bye to the L32 where she beat Napoli (Italy) 15-9, but then was too exhausted to fend off another Italian, Errigo, losing 2-15.

Two other Britons also won their first DE fights: Matthew Dodwell (men’s epee), with a victory over Payano (Dominica) before losing to Penso (France) to finish 22nd out of 83, and Alex O’Connell (men’s sabre), who beat Awaji (Japan) and then lost to the eventual bronze medallist, Gemesi (Hungary), to finish 31st out of 58.
