Romain Grosjean (ASM Formule 3) is the new champion of the
Formula 3 Euro Series. Thus, he is following in the footsteps
of new Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton (champion in 2005) and
DTM drivers Jamie Green (2004) and Paul di Resta (2006). The
21-year old Frenchman finished second in the 19th season round
of the Formula 3 Euro Series at the 4.574 kilometres long
Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg behind his team-mate
Nico Hülkenberg. The 20-year old German scored his fourth
victory of the season in the world’s toughest junior
race series. Yelmer Buurman (Manor Motorsport) crossed the
finish line in third place.
Grosjean started from pole position, but he was pipped by
Nico Hülkenberg. During the 24 laps of the race, he made
one attempt to overtake the leader, but to no avail.
Best-placed rookie was Edoardo Mortara (Signature-Plus) in
sixth place. His main rival in the battle for the title of
the best novice, Frenchman Franck Mailleux (Manor Motorsport)
finished eleventh, which made him the fifth rookie. This allowed
Mortara to take over the lead in the rookie standings with
one round remaining. His margin is four points.
Nico Hülkenberg (ASM Formule 3): “My
goal for today was winning the race and that was exactly what
I did. It wasn’t easy as Grosjean kept me under pressure
throughout the race.”
Romain Grosjean (ASM Formule 3): “A
great day, I am overjoyed. I had some highs and lows, but
all in all, there were more highs. Six victories and maybe
the seventh tomorrow, that is a great track record for the
season. In the race, I didn’t take any risks because
I knew that second place would be enough to secure the title.”
Yelmer Buurman (Manor Motorsport): “All
in all, it has been a difficult season with quite a few problems
for me. Therefore I am all the more happy with being on the
podium at the final race weekend. That is a positive way to
conclude the season.”
