Kobayashi fastest in front of Formula 1 backdrop

Track temperature: 22.0 º C
Air temperature: 16.1 º C

Early on Friday morning, Kamui Kobayashi (ASM Formule 3, 1:33.323 min) claimed pole position for the seventh season sound of the Formula 3 Euro Series, supporting the French Formula 1 Grand Prix. Second place at the 4.411 kilometres long Magny Cours circuit was occupied by Frenchman, Romain Grosjean (ASM Formule 3, 1:33.344 min) ahead of his compatriot Yann Clairay (Signature-Plus, 1:33.453 min), who is also the best-placed rookie with third place on the grid.

Watched by Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel, Grosjean topped the time sheets until a few minutes before the end of the session. With only three minutes remaining, Kobayashi set a faster lap time.

Points leader, Sébastien Buemi (Mücke Motorsport, 1:33.487 min) qualified in fourth place. The first race of the weekend will be starting on Saturday at 8.50 am..

Kamui Kobayashi (ASM Formule 3): “I am really happy with pole position. Starting qualifying right away without any practice here wasn’t easy. Especially as some parts of the track were still damp and slippery in the early stages.”

Romain Grosjean (ASM Formule 3): “For me, qualifying started off really well, but then I couldn’t do much anymore. I wasn’t able to improve my lap time with my second set of tyres. I am not really happy with second place, because pole position was my goal.”

Yann Clairay (Signature-Plus): “Qualifying third here without any practice is a very good result that makes me really happy. Especially bearing in mind that my performance was rather poor in testing here at Magny Cours. But my team and I sat down together to analyse the problems. A podium finish is our goal for the race.“
