Thrilling race in front of F1 crowd, victory for Jakes

Track temperature: 22.6 º C
Air temperature: 19.2 º C

James Jakes (Manor Motorsport) decided the eighth season round of the Formula 3 Euro Series at the 4.411 kilometres long Magny Cours Grand Prix circuit in his favour. In the support package of the Formula 1, the 19-year old Brit beat rookie driver, Jean-Karl Vernay (Signature-Plus) from France, who finished second from Yelmer Buurman (Manor Motorsport). Swiss points leader, Sébastien Buemi (Mücke Motorsport) only finished 19th after a collision with Frenchman, Tom Dillmann (ASM Formule 3).

Right away from the start, Vernay and Buurman had a fierce battle for the lead. The Dutchman attacked the leader several times, but didn’t find a way past. On lap eleven, the two tangled. Third-placed Jakes benefited and took the lead. The Brit immediately pulled clear and after 15 laps, he took the chequered flag in first place with a margin of 3.388 seconds. Rookie driver, Franck Mailleux (Manor Motorsport) was followed home by Mygale driver Esteban Guerrieri (Ultimate Motorsport) who finished fifth upon his team’s guest appearance in the Formula 3 Euro Series.

James Jakes (Manor Motorsport): “I am very happy with my maiden victory in the Formula 3 Euro Series. Winning in front of the Formula 1 crowd is great as any driver wants to be on the top step of the podium in front of all the Formula 1 team principals.”

Jean-Karl Vernay (Signature-Plus): “I am satisfied with my first podium finish in the Formula 3 Euro Series. The race was difficult, because I didn’t have any new tyres left. Had it not been for the collision, I could have won the race.”

Yelmer Buurman (Manor Motorsport): “I am not entirely happy with today’s result as Vernay and I were fighting for the lead for a long time. We tangled when I attacked him and Jakes benefited from our collision. At the end of the day, I am happy that I still made it on the podium, because after the collision, my car felt very strange.”
