Formula 3 Euro Series 2007 Zolder Qualifying
Euro Series drivers strong: grid positions one to
twelve
Romain Grosjean (ASM Formule 3, 1:23.631 min) claimed pole
position for the “Zandvoort Masters of Formula 3 @ Zolder”.
In qualifying for Europe’s most important Formula 3
race, the 21-year old Frenchman, who came to Zolder as the
points leader in the Formula 3 Euro Series, was 0.107 seconds
faster than his fellow-countryman Franck Mailleux (Manor Motorsport,
1:23.738 min). Lining up on the second row of the grid will
be German Nico Hülkenberg (ASM Formule 3, 1:23.780 min)
and rookie driver Jean-Karl Vernay (Signature-Plus, 1:23.944
min), who is also from France.
Once again, the drivers from the Formula 3 Euro Series showed
their class. A total of 15 drivers made it into the top twenty
and thus confirmed in an impressive way the reputation of
the Formula 3 Euro Series as the world’s strongest junior
racing category. In tomorrow’s race, drivers from the
Formula 3 Euro Series are locking out the first six rows on
the starting grid. Qualifying remained exciting until the
end. There were two red flags: one after Kamui Kobayashi (ASM
Formule 3, 1:24.636 min) had spun and one after a spin by
Yann Clairay (Signature-Plus, 1:23.948 min). In the closing
stages after the second interruption, Grosjean came out on
top and held his position until the end.
Romain Grosjean (ASM Formule 3): “Qualifying
was great. I really wanted this pole position. Initially,
I was a little bit unlucky with the red and yellow flags,
but in the end, everything turned out the right way. Now,
I want to win the Masters of Formula 3 tomorrow.”
Franck Mailleux (Manor Motorsport): “This
was a really good qualifying. After the first session, in
which I still was half a second down on Nico Hülkenberg,
my engineer and I have been working a lot. After that, set-up
of my car was very good. Fighting with Romain Grosjean is
not easy. At the moment, I am considering him and his team
ASM as the best.”
Nico Hülkenberg (ASM Formule 3): “I
am not entirely satisfied after I still set the fastest lap
time in first qualifying. Because of the red flags after Kamui
Kobayashi and Yann Clairay spun out, I couldn’t get
an excellent lap together. But third place is noting to be
ashamed of.”
