BBL Championship
Newcastle Eagles 91 (25,43,64) (Hyatt 21, Defoe 17,
Stewart 17)
Sheffield Sharks 82 (21,31,54) (Chaney 19, Alto Virgil 15,
Niesler 13)
Newcastle Eagles moved six-points clear at the top of the
BBL with a comfortable 91-82 victory over Sheffield Sharks.
It is the Eagles ninth consecutive league win and edges them
ever closer to the league title. For the Sharks it was their
first defeat in three matches and they remain in eighth position.
Sharks quickly found themselves in a hole as an 8-2 run by
the Eagles opened up a 16-8 first quarter lead. Success from
the foul line stemmed the flow of points but Newcastle still
led 26-21 after ten minutes.
Turnovers plagued Sheffield during the second period as they
allowed the Eagles to build a substantial advantage. A 7-2
close to the half ensured that the home side was well in control
at 43-31.
Sheffield worked hard in the third to trim the deficit back
to 53-45 but Eagles guard Jeremy Hyatt hit back- to-back baskets
to put Newcastle back in control.
After taking a 10-point lead into the final quarter the Eagles
never let Sheffield back into the match as a Hyatt three-pointer
opened up a 78-59 margin as Newcastle cruised to a victory
that puts them six points clear at the top of the league.
