Simon and Larry lead the way, as the Brits make a good start
at the Archery World Championships
British archers Simon Terry and Larry Godfrey secured top
six qualifying places for the head-to-head rounds at the World
Target Championships in Leipzig, and helped secure Britain
second place in the recurve team rankings.
Terry, a double Olympic bronze medalist at the Barcelona Olympics
back in 1992, finished fourth overall after the qualification
rounds. He was the top European, with the only blot on his
copybook being the 19th place in the 50 metre round, after
two sixth placings over 90 and 70 metres, and then fourth
over 30, for a total of 1346 points.
Godfrey, who finished fourth at the Athens Olympics three
years ago, was second after the opening 90 metre round, but
lost his way in the 70 metre round when he was 39th. An 11th
over 50 metres and 9th over 30 pushed him back up the rankings,
and after four rounds he was sixth, five points behind team-mate
Terry.
Wills was 43rd out of the 173 starters, but between them,
their combined scores saw them qualify in second place for
the team championship of 50 starters.
Two Koreans headed the individual rankings - with Lee Chang
Hwan winning three of the four qualifying rounds for a total
of 1369 points, and Im Dong Hyun finishing three points behind.
And that combination, with Kim Yeon Chul, who was eighth,
saw them not only top the team ranking, but their combined
total of 4074 equalled the world record for a FITA round.
In the women's recurve, Naomi Folkard led British qualification
for the head-to-heads by qualifying in eighth place. But Alison
Williamson and Charlotte Burgess both performed well, qualifying
in 23rd and 24th places respectively.
Folkard finished 16th in the 70 metre round, followed by 7th
in the 60, 15th in the 50 and then finishing with a 5th placing
over 30 metres for a total of 1346 points. A 48th position
in the 60 metre round pulled Alison down, but she recovered
with a 19th placing over 50 metres, and 13th over 30 for a
1322 points total, two better than Charlotte.
Olympic champion Park Sung Hyun of Korea led the standings
after qualifying with three first place finishes from the
four distances, ahead of the inform Natila Valeeva of Italy
and Choi Eun Young of Korea.
And there was great news for British hopes in the women's
recurve team tournament, with the trio of Alison, Naomi and
Charlotte qualifying in fourth place out of the 38 participating
teams, behind Korea, China and Poland.
In the men's compound, James Forbes, Liam Grimwood and Chris
White qualified in 9th place out of 40 in the team tournament.
The United States were first, ahead of Australia and the Netherlands.
In the individual championship, Forbes and Grimwood qualified
for the head to heads in 27th and 28th places respectively,
with White in 46th - bouncing back after finishing 91st in
the 50 metre round by taking third over 30 metres. Rodger
Willett of the United States heads the rankings after qualifying,
ahead of Norway's Morton Boe and Italy's Sergio Pagni.
